Alzheimer's and Exelon patches or pills?

by Mary
(California)

Has anyone encountered this problem? With the excelon patch, we have had problems with both my dad and my FIL pulling it off, no matter where we placed it (arm, back, buttocks, etc). We asked our doctor to go back to the pill.

I know with my FIL, he said that it itched, and somehow would get it off. So, we were left wondering exactly how long he kept it on, and if he was even benefiting from the required dosage.

Now that we are back to the pill form, we don't have to worry about him getting the required dosage.

As for dad, the nursing home is contemplating reverting back to the pill, also, for this very reason.

Just thought I would post what we were going through with the "patch".

Mary,
That is a good question.

If either of these men are able to tolerate Exelon(Rivastigmine ) in pill form you're very lucky. Novartis has published high incidences of GI issues for people taking the pill (likely that's why they put it in a patch).

The patch does cause itching and redness. It is . recommended taking off the protective plastic sheets from the patch and allow it to air out for a couple minutes to allow some of the chemical preservative in it to evaporate.

If any of you out there have had similar experiences and solutions, please share.
